This is the simplest and least expensive frame of all, if you are or know someone who could do a little carpentry, and would give you a chance to get the feel of a frame.
I’d like to suggest another option, too. Many people find it works well to baste the quilt then quilt it in a hoop (18″-24″ round is a good size), because it takes less room so it’s portable. Hoops are cheap, too – I bought my last 2 at resale shops for around $2 each – so it’s much less of a commitment.
I don’t know if you’ve found them already or not, but the ‘quilting’ area at ‘about.com’ is great – lots of terrific info for all levels of quilters.

I hand quilt on a hoop. I have a few, some from thrift stores, and I think Joann fabrics has them a decent price. If you want a long one, google ‘how to make a quilt frame’, I’m sure you will get some results from it.
