Here’s a website that should actually address the issue. I think the big difference is in contemporary quilts, it’s not the traditional pieced top with certain blocks (patterns), with a muslin backing, made with cotton fabrics. Contemporary quilts can be one giant picture, can be abstract, and can be made with any fabric.

I think that contemporary is a type or a time when a quilt was made. A traditional quilt can mean anything, probably meaning that it has been going on for a long time and has been repeated.

Well an old fashioned quilt would follow standard quilt blocks patterns, log cabin, bear’s paw, double wedding ring, etc. Contemporary could be anything but would definitely be a more modern look and could be crazy! I would reccomend telling them you would like a double wedding ring quilt with more modern patterns in the colors of ________. Whatever you and your groom like color-wise- or the colors of your wedding. Just type in quilts into a google image search, print off a couple that you like and let them take it from there! And be happy- what a wonderful gift!
