daniel

Well an old fashioned quilt would follow standard quilt blocks patterns, log cabin, bear's paw, double wedding ring, etc. Contemporary could be anything but would definitely be a more modern look and could be crazy! I would reccomend telling them you would like a double wedding ring quilt with more modern patterns in the colors of ________. Whatever you and your groom like color-wise- or the colors of your wedding. Just type in quilts into a google image search, print off a couple that you like and let them take it from there! And be happy- what a wonderful gift!

shrader

I think that contemporary is a type or a time when a quilt was made. A traditional quilt can mean anything, probably meaning that it has been going on for a long time and has been repeated.

emma

Here's a website that should actually address the issue. I think the big difference is in contemporary quilts, it's not the traditional pieced top with certain blocks (patterns), with a muslin backing, made with cotton fabrics. Contemporary quilts can be one giant picture, can be abstract, and can be made with any fabric.
